York9 FC Signs Canadian Goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos

Toronto, ON (November 10, 2020) – York9 FC is thrilled to announce the signing of Canadian goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos on a two-year deal, with a club option for 2023.

The 26-year-old spent the last two seasons with Cavalry FC, making ten appearances and earning four clean-sheets in the process for Tommy Wheeldon Jr’s side.

Prior to his time in Calgary, Giantsopoulos spent a number of years plying his trade in Australia and also played NCAA football during his time at Calvin College in Michigan.

A native of Markham, ON, he’s enthused at the prospect of returning to the York region and fighting for a starting role.

“I am excited to be signing with York9 and look forward to getting to work and earning the number 1 spot”, he says.

Angus McNab, the club’s Managing Consultant, had been monitoring Giantsopoulos for a while and leaned on a staff member for some additional expert insight.

“Niko has worked with Camilo (Benzi, York9 FC’s assistant coach and goalkeeping coach) since the age of 11 or 12 so we know exactly what we are going to get from him”, McNab says.

“He’s shone at Cavalry when he’s had the opportunity and we’ve handed him both the number 1 and a multi-year contract as a display of our belief in him. Niko is ready to claim a starting job in this league and with Nate (Ingham) also at the club, I believe it means we have the strongest goalkeeper group in the Canadian Premier League”.
