York United FC Academy adds another promising talent to its squad with the arrival of Yaathav Lakshman, a hardworking midfielder eager to take his game to the next level.
His journey to the Academy began at a summer camp in June 2024, where he impressed the York United scouting staff with his technical ability and relentless work ethic. Having developed through Global Satellite Soccer Academy, Fleetwood Town International Football Academy, Pickering FC, and Alliance United, Yaathav has built a strong foundation that has prepared him for this next step.
“It felt sublime. The photoshoot was the cherry on top, getting pictures as if we were pros, in the club’s office. It truly felt like I was part of any other well-known academy in the world, a place where I could push myself and get better,” he shares.
A box-to-box midfielder who thrives on both sides of the game, Yaathav is comfortable in possession, aggressive in the tackle, and capable of maintaining high intensity throughout the match.
“Whether it’s dribbling the ball or getting stuck into tackles, I’m versatile enough to be able to excel at both. I have a good engine that keeps me going, as well as great technical ability,” he explains. “I see my role as one of those dogs that don’t give up and will put the work in for the team to get our desired result.”
Like many young players, he has faced challenges along the way. Seeing others excel made him question his own ability, but over time, he learned to block out comparisons and focus on his own path.
“There were countless times where I saw players better than me, and I thought to myself, ‘I’ll never reach the professional level if I can’t even be better than those who aren’t pro yet.’ But I knew I had the talent and the work ethic. If I continue without comparing myself to others and just believe in my ability, I can achieve what I dream of,” he says.
Now part of York United FC Academy, Yaathav is determined to maximize this opportunity and push himself further.
“As much as possible, spend time with the ball and build an unbreakable, confident mindset,” he advises young players. “It’s inevitable to have bad days, but getting through them requires belief. Also, always remembering your ‘why’ to motivate yourself when times are hard—to build discipline and be persistent.”
With his dedication, skill set, and strong mentality, Yaathav Lakshman is set to make an impact as York United FC Academy gears up for the 2025 season.
